The person ordering the badges is almost never the person who installed the reader. HR places the order. Facilities owns the access system. The vendor who mounted the readers may not have been on site in years.

That gap is where corporate card orders go wrong. An access credential is not generic. Older proximity systems read at 125 kHz. Contactless smart card systems read at 13.56 MHz. A card built at the wrong frequency opens nothing, no matter how correct the artwork is. Where a system uses the 26-bit Wiegand format, the card also carries a facility code and a card number, and both have to match what your panel is already programmed to accept.

What to Find Out Before You Request a Quote

1. The credential technology your readers use. Frequency and chip family. Your facilities team or access control vendor has this, and it cannot be guessed from looking at an existing card.
2. Whether the cards need to be encoded or printed on stock your system already provisions.
3. Whether every card is different. Names, photos, employee numbers, and barcodes are variable data, printed per card rather than per run.
4. Slot punch and orientation. Portrait or landscape, and where on the card the badge hangs from.
5. Thickness. ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1, the credit card standard, is 0.76 mm, or 30 mil. Some readers and badge printers require it.
6. Where the cards go. One office is a shipment. Personalized badges routed to forty locations is a fulfillment job, and Plastek can handle mailing and lettershop work as part of the run.

Finishes are the last decision, not the first. Foil and spot UV change how a card looks across a desk. Neither changes whether it reads.

Before committing to a full run, ask for a sample built to your specification. Badge it at your own reader. If it opens the door, run the job. If it does not, you spent one card instead of a run.
